Priorities

Foundational Education Reform

Support an individualized approach that respects and cultivates each student’s unique potential and that meets each student where they are. We support legislation that funds students over systems.

Americans for Prosperity believes the purpose of education is to help students discover, develop, and apply their unique abilities. Each and every student must have access to an education that unleashes their extraordinary potential – regardless of their family income or ZIP code. We support policies that help us move away from a one-size-fits-all approach that dominates our current education system and closer to a system of personalized learning.

Economic Progress

Reform state taxes so they are fair, low, and predictable while making state government spending live within its means.

Americans for Prosperity strives to create an economy that works for all – empowering people to earn success and realize their potential. The core beneficial role for state government is to protect the foundational rights necessary for people to control their own destiny. State budgets should prioritize residents’ ability to take risks and be entrepreneurial to earn their success. When government exceeds this positive role, it harms the economy, diminishing opportunities for citizens.

  • Support tax policy that is simple and transparent, neutral, equitable, predictable, and stable.
  • Protect the rights of taxpayers in North Carolina.
  • Reject legislation that contains cronyism and corporate welfare, which stifles competition.

Health Care

Continue to cut needless red tape to make health care more accessible and affordable.

Americans for Prosperity empowers people to earn success, contribute to their communities, and live meaningful lives. This requires a health care system that helps more people access better care at a lower cost – where health care providers compete to offer the best health care products and services at the best prices to meet the needs of patients. Unfortunately, many state and federal laws act as barriers to access and innovation, and some are calling for proposals that would further exacerbate the problems caused by these barriers, such as implementing a single payer system.  Instead, we should work to remove bureaucratic barriers and reimagine our approach to health care.

  • Develop a plan to quickly phase out all medical certificate of need policies, which are needlessly holding back our trusted health care community from meeting the needs they see in their communities.
  • Remove unnecessary red tape which prohibits highly trained advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) from practicing to their full scope.
  • Improve access to quality care by supporting telehealth legislation which allows health care providers to practice telehealth within and across state lines.

Criminal Justice Reform

Take meaningful steps towards ending the cycle of poverty and recidivism that our current justice system perpetuates with reforms that are smart on crime and soft on taxpayers.

An effective criminal justice system protects people and preserves public safety, respects human dignity, provides opportunity for people with criminal records, and ensures equal justice for all under the law.  Americans for Prosperity supports smart-on-crime, soft-on-taxpayer reforms that make our communities safer and improve lives.

  • Protect due process rights of the citizens of North Carolina including their presumption of innocence as it applies to the dissemination of booking photographs.
  • Open an appropriately regulated medical cannabis market which will ensure North Carolinians can access the most transformative treatments while reducing the harms presented by a robust black market.

Freedom of Speech

Advance policies that contribute to an open society while rejecting policies that contribute to divisiveness and toxic polarization that keeps people from working together to solve problems.

Americans for Prosperity believes when people with different beliefs, backgrounds, and cultures come together to harness their creativity, they accomplish extraordinary things. For these reasons (and many more) we believe protecting people’s equal right to free speech and ensuring culture embraces an openness to free expression are essential.
